To me and my party, content matters more than positions. My campaign was about change, also at the European Parliament. During the election, I was offered the post of Vice-President of the European Parliament, as part of a deal. In this video (in Flemish Sign Language and with Dutch voice over and English subtitles) I explain why I refused this offer. #nobackroomdeals with me! #helga2017
As you know, I was one of the candidates for the Presidency of the European Parliament. I now look back on a successful campaign, where I have been able to reach out to a lot of people and convince them in a positive way. I fought until the end. Because I am convinced that the European Parliament needs a different kind of politics, serving our citizens.
However, shameless bickering for positions has as usual played an important role for the traditional groups. Europe is in crisis, but they prefer to tussle about positions in shadowy backrooms .
By contrast, content matters to me. That is why I am into politics: to achieve results. It is extremely important that we as N-VA continue to tell our Eurorealistic story. We do have a clear plan on how we want to reform the European Union.
That is why my ECR Group, also under pressure from the N-VA, has convinced the EPP candidate Tajani to publicly distance himself from the deal between the EPP and ALDE groups, whose content we absolutely could not support. Europe's focus should not be on more and more Europe, but on security, limiting migration and job creation. Now Tajani also acknowledges that a parliament president should not push a specific political agenda, but should allow room for debate.
I was offered the post of Vice-President of the European Parliament, which I refused. I remained faithful to my slogan of "no backroom deals with me." I want to be independent and to be able to focus fully on the topics that are close to my heart and where new policy is urgently required: equal opportunities for example, but also to provide a different perspective with regard to the social agenda of Europe and the challenges of migration and security.
I would like to thank everyone for your cooperation, support and assistance! This made it an unforgettable experience. Again, thank you all!
